The earliest pioneers in North Lake came here by way of the Great Lakes from New York, New England and England itself.

The first school in North Lake was built in 1846 (before the post office and almost 10 years before the first business).  Little is known about the first school except that it was of crude log construction.  It was built at Fisher Flats which is about 1/2 mile east of the current school building.  At this time, North Lake was still a wilderness with only 744 people.

In 1867, Asa Craig was the teacher.  His salary was $42.00 for the year.  Mr. Craig went on to be superintendent of schools in Waukesha.  Lizzie Hill was then hired at $28.00 for the year.

The first brick school was built in 1881.  A picture of this school is shown on the left.  Also shown at the left is Miss Ella Whalen with her class in 1911 in front of the Fisher Flat's School.

On March 13, 1913, a motion was made to build a two room school on the present site. (See picture on the left)

In 1922, two rooms were added on the west side of the school.  Two years of high school were then offered at North Lake School. This was continued until 1942.

In 1958-59, a new gymnasium-auditorium was added to the school structure.  Eight first floor classrooms were also added to North Lake.  (See 1960 picture on the left)

The student population continued to grow through the mid-1970s.   In 1976, the School District began work on  a second story classroom addition above the classroom addition completed in 1960.  The District showed good foresight in designing the roof structure to accommodate the second story classrooms when needed.  This addition added 8 classrooms and 3 office spaces. (See pictures on the left)

In 1993, the District voted to do a major remodeling and upgrade of the school structure.  A computer network was installed and all of the classrooms, offices and hallways were redone.  New carpet, tile, ceilings, lockers, and cabinetry were installed.  This remodeling gave a new, modern look to the facility. (See classroom pictures on the below left.)

The student population of North Lake School District continued to grow as new subdivisions and housing starts were being built.  In 1995, the District passed a 3.8 million dollar referendum to add a new classroom wing, a new gymnasium, a new library media center, two new computer labs and a new music wing for vocal and band.  The entire structure is networked for computer use in every classroom.  Each classroom has computers for staff and student use.  This L shaped classroom addition when added to the existing structure formed a new outside courtyard in the middle of the structure. (The pictures on the left give various views of the 1995 building project.)

In the fall of 1996, North Lake students worked on an "artist in residence" project for the courtyard.  Two large sculptures depicting "Frontiers of the Past and Future" were developed.  These sculptures are add a creative flair to the courtyard.   (See Picture on the left.)

In the spring of 1999, the North Lake School Board voted to complete the third phase of the facilities work that began in 1993.  This phase completed in the fall of 1999, was an addition  with eight new classrooms and a third computer lab above the 1995 classroom wing.   Again, the District showed good foresight in designing the 1995 roof structure to accommodate a second story when needed.  This addition was built without a referendum or increase in the tax rate. (The 1999 addition pictures can be seen on the left.)

To celebrate the building completion and the yearlong theme, "Heroes Start Here," a 120 foot mural is being painted in the hallway connecting the new wing.  This project is being sponsored by our Parent Booster Club as an "artist in residence" program.  (Please see thumbnail at the left or go to the Activities page on our website.)

North Lake School District is a "state of the art" facility.  Please come visit!  We would love to show you what we have to offer.
